This course engages the student in an advanced study of the genre of Literary Nonfiction with an emphasis on contemporary theory and practice and significant texts in the field. Through short lectures, class discussions, presentations, and critical and creative writing, we will work toward a practical understanding of Literary Nonfiction in terms of its historical roots and literary traditions as well as what is happening now in the field. We will  consider the ethics and aesthetics of the genre, particularly with respect to questions of identity, sense of place, and connections between author, landscape, and history.
