This course will introduce students to works in English Literature from the Old English Period to 1789, focusing on the monstrous and the supernatural. We’ll start with hero Beowulf’s epic battles with monsters and dragons, and finish by exploring a mysterious castle in the first Gothic novel ever published. Along the way, we’ll meet saints and mystics, pilgrims and ghosts, angels and demons, giants and Lilliputians. Most importantly, we’ll have the great privilege of reading some of the most beautiful poetry, most profound soliloquies, and raunchiest stories in all of English Literature.
