“Outrageous Writing by Women” is a course cross-listed between English and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. In it, we’ll read a wide range of texts – essays, novels, stories, poems, films, comic books, stand-up comedy – that have seemed to their audiences “outrageous” in some way, especially because they were written by and about women. We’ll explore social and historical expectations for feminine propriety as women writers have and do violate it, and as those violations help us understand what feminist theorist Donna Haraway calls “world-historical systems of domination.”
