This course is designed to introduce students to the basic principles in the study of linguistics. Students will study the structural aspects of language, such as morphology, syntax, and semantics, as well as social aspects, such as how language is learned, variations in language, and minority dialects.  The book will be supplemented by discussions of linguistic issues that are relevant to the future of language study. These other topics include the usage of slang, taboo language, the history of English, emergence of AI to create language, and digital forms of language study.
