Instructor: Stewart T Seminar 2:00 PM – 4:50 PM

The goal for this course is to learn and practice fundamentals of novel writing. Our focus will be on novel beginnings, and we’ll both read and write them. As a class we’ll read the first 85-100 pages of five novels in different genres in order to learn from the authors’ approaches to establishing plot, world, character, and theme. Each of you will choose two of those novels to read in their entirety so that you can see how the beginning of a novel gives rise to the end. We’ll also be working on exercises that build toward your own novel beginnings, and you’ll outline and draft the first fifty pages of your own novels.
