In this course, students will examine major works and ideas in American literature from 1776-1865. Beginning with The Declaration of Independence and ending with The Civil War, we will explore central issues, questions, and debates that defined the formation of the United States. Through reading novels, short stories, poetry, letters, and essays by important figures, we will consider how authors from this time period sought to engage and answer these questions.
