This is a class designed to help students learn to read as writers—to think carefully about craft, or the way a piece of fiction is constructed. Our study will involve both close, careful reading, as well as generative writing of our own.
This semester will focus on formal possibilities and experiments in fictional craft. We will read from a selection of works that subvert traditional formal structures and expand the notion of what fiction can look like: Can a story be told backwards? Can a novel be told through dreams? Can you make a narrative out of a board game? We will use these texts as points of inspiration for playing with form in our own writing.
