001:
This is an introductory course in reading and writing short fiction, with the goal of better understanding the writing process not just as an art but also as a craft. We will explore key pillars of fiction writing (character, point of view, plot, structure, setting, voice, and more) through reading a selection of classic and contemporary stories, as well as weekly writing exercises to experiment with the strategies we’ve discussed. We’ll apply what we’ve learned to your own full-length stories and workshop them with our classroom community.
002:
In this fast-paced introductory course, we will study the art of reading and writing short fiction. Fiction is an essential part of the fabric of our lives. Stories baffle, entertain, comfort, and challenge us—stories tell us who we are. Students will read and analyze a broad selection of prose across various movements and genres, investigating how various elements of craft work together to produce a “successful” piece. Students will also compose their own fiction in the form of weekly prompts and at least one publication-length story, and will give and receive constructive feedback on each other’s writing.
