This course introduces students to Caribbean literary voices of the 20th and 21st century with a focus on texts (including novels, essays, poems and films) that grapple with themes of identity, belonging, and memory, among others. We will also ground our literary exploration in theoretical texts that will help us understand key concepts in postcolonial theory, including hybridity, migration, creolization and more. Finally, we will approach the texts of our study in terms of thinking about archives in Caribbean contexts. We will ask questions like: which materials and voices are included in archives and which are not? Who determines that? How can fictional texts contribute to archives? Ultimately, through robust discussion, imaginative assignments and an invitation to explore archives, students will become familiar with canonical Caribbean literary voices who challenge Eurocentric narratives and who enrich our understanding of identity and belonging.
